The KAS Eupen forward has enjoyed a breakthrough season in the Belgian Pro League, but is he ready for the Premier League and should Arsenal fans be excited at the prospect of him moving to the Emirates?
Onyekuru is only 19-years old, but has already attracted interest from several Premier League clubs as well as Belgian giants Anderlecht and Club Brugge. It is rumoured that he has a release clause of only £6.8million, which you could argue is a bargain price after the season he has had.
His efforts have earned him a well-deserved call-up to the Nigerian national setup this month, albeit long overdue in all fairness. Onyekuru will be hoping to impress the Super Eagles’ staff, after netting 24 goals and nine assists in 41 games across all competitions.
While he can play right across the front-line, the tends to favour the left as it gives him the space to unleash his rapid acceleration, and overall electrifying pace. This type of play has been the key to his success throughout this breakthrough season. Arsenal fans have been crying out for a new winger, and with the futures of Alexis Sanchez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain still in jeopardy, Onyekuru could yet be the answer to their prayers.
Onyekuru was the subject of interest from Scottish giants, Celtic in January, but KAS Eupen were keen to retain his services until the end of the 2016-17 season before moving hi on. The 19-year old was very quick to admit at the time that he would be leaving the Belgian club in this summer’s transfer window, though.
“I have made my decision to leave. I have already agreed with Eupen that I am joining my new club after this season.” he said.
There is plenty for Arsenal fans to be excited about, particularly given that the player himself has been very public in addressing his love for the Gunners.
“The shirt I dream of wearing is Arsenal’s because I’ve always had Thierry Henry as a role model since I was little,” he said.
Onyekuru’s rise in stature has largely come out of nowhere, but his stats have certainly got people talking throughout the 2016-17 season. There are only a handful of Nigerians who bide their trade in the Premier League at present, and it certainly looks like the Super Eagles have found themselves another brilliant young prospect.
Whether the 19-year old joins or Arsenal or not, it looks all but certain that he is set for a move to the Premier League, particularly after turning down offers to stay within Belgium.
Onyekuru will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi, and Victor Moses who have already made their mark on the world’s most fiercely contested domestic competition.
He made his Super Eagles debut in a friendly against Corsica only a few days ago, and will be hoping to impress in Nigeria’s upcoming fixtures against Togo and South Africa in the near future.
