Coric must keep frustrations in check if he wants to be a star

Borna Coric is one of tennis’ next generation of future stars, along with players like Alex Zverev, Karen Khachanov and Dominic Thiem, among others.

The 20-year-old is currently the world number 40, and reached a career-high 33rd back in 2015, aged just 18.

But on Wednesday, Coric lost his cool, big time, and it was ugly to watch.

When Steve Johnson powered a forehand winner down the line to see off the ‘Next Gen’ star, 6-2 7-6 3-6 7-6, Coric proceeded to smash his racquet into the dirt continuously for at least 15 seconds, while his opponent cried on the court after losing his Father just weeks previous.

It was an emotional moment for Johnson, and one that was ruined by Coric’s petty antics. In contrast, it was an embarrassing moment for the Croat, and one that he’ll look to forget quickly.

Coric is undoubtedly a talented tennis player but only the cool-headed, ‘model professionals’ get to the very top, and he must keep this sort of reaction far away from the court if he wants to get to where his talent can take him.

But he has to work on it.

Very rarely, if ever, do you see Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer react as Coric did on Wednesday evening.

Sometimes players lose matches, sometimes they don’t play well and sometimes they might feel the officials have made a bad call, but there’s no excuse to react by breaking a racquet and shouting at whoever will listen at the end of the match.

Coric tweeted this after the match:

And that’s exactly the attitude he needs to have if he is going to break into the top 20 and beyond.

Keep a level-head, and accept that it’s ok to lose so long as you can learn from your mistakes.

The youngster made a colossal mistake, and an apology to Johnson should be his first step, but if he can turn his post-match words into actions, no lasting damage will have been caused.
